soccerConnacht Final          St. Gerald’s Castlebar vs Bish        Milebush, March 28th, 2011

For the Connacht Cup final, the Bish travelled to the Milebush, Castlebar to play St. Gerald’s College. The home side showed their strength getting off to an early advantage with a tap in after ten minutes, rounding the Bish defenders, to cheers from the stand full of Castlebar supporters.

Even with lots of possession in midfield with stalwart Michael Costello not letting any ball by, Joe Hynes on the wing, and captain Cian Morley, the play couldn’t get close enough to the Castlebar goal to get the Bish back on track. Minutes before half time we were beaten again, this time on the hop by Castlebar’s wingers, who after a two lightning runs, knocked in another goal.

Spirits were low for the Bish coming in for the break at half time, but they kept fighting on into the second half, creating chances up front and with shots that were only narrowly missed.  A third goal was scored for St. Gerald’s 15 minutes before the end and even with three goals down, a tired Bish side fought till the bitter end, showing great determination until the last second of the game.

It was a disappointing defeat and the bitter end of a great run for the Bish U-14 side. St. Gerald’s were worthy competitors and deserved the win, with a team that were much better than us on the day. The Bish clapped on the home side with respect as St. Gerald’s were presented with the cup.

The U-14 Bish side came out of the competition as runners up in the Connacht final, ahead of dozens of teams around the province, and after campaign to be very proud of.

Final Score:

St. Gerald’s 3 – 0 Bish
