BISH Oarsmen strike Gold at Home International Regatta 2015

After a long and successful year for the BISH Rowing Club in the domestic rowing calendar, 3 oarsmen were selected to represent Ireland and wear the green jersey at the recent Home Internationals Regatta which took place in Strathclyde, Scotland.

Oisin Cusack, Keith Russell and Daragh O Donovan were selected following a long trialing process which began last November. John Walsh was selected to Coach the Ireland squad which comprised of oarsmen from Enniskilleen, Coleraine and Limerick. Following the Irish Rowing Championships, The BISH Rowing Club hosted the Squad for a week long training camp where crews were selected and the oarsmen trained together for the first time. The crews travelled to Strathclyde with high hopes but the success they achieved was unheralded. First race of the day, the Junior Men's 2- event, was won comfortably by Cusack and Russell to get Team Ireland out of the blocks and win their First Gold. O'Donovan then coxed the Junior Men's 4+ which were 2nd place and the Junior Men's 4- followed this by a great win, beating England with the help of a photo finish. The Event and Men's trophy all came down to the last race of the day being the 8+ and all 3 BISH Oarsmen took to the water with clear instruction as to what was needed to win this blue riband event. England and Wales took an early lead in this race and Ireland trailed in 3rd place but at the half way point a huge push, called by O'Donovan, brought the crews level and Ireland seized their chance pushing for home early and extending their lead to half a boat length as they crossed the line with England in 2nd place. This result gave Ireland the overall team prize for Junior Men - a feat not equalled since 2003. Elation for all parents and supporters who had travelled with high hopes! For the BISH men and their coach, 5 Gold medals came back to Woodquay along with the trophy which will be displayed in the BISH Cabinet for the coming year.
