Bish win All Ireland Subway Schools Cup 2017

fullsizeoutput 104The Bish U16A basketballers defeated St. Malachy's College, Belfast in the NBA to claim the U16 Schools National Crown on Wednesday January 25th 2017. See attached report from the Galway Advertiser. They also claimed a League national silver medals to finish off what is a very successful year for basketball in the school. Several of the team now begin preparation for the World Schools Championships in Croatia where the Bish were selected to represent Ireland in the boys competition while Holy Faith Clontarf will represent the Irish girls in the same tournament. The World Schools Championships tournament takes place bi-annually with Basketball Ireland sending their champions to represent the Country.

The Bish defeated St. Marys College Galway to retain the U16A Western Regional Basketball Title. The Bish now head to the NBA Tallaght as a seeded quarter finalist in February in the All Ireland League. This team is also in the Subway Schools U16A Cup semi final in Dublin on 12th January where they face St. Joseph's Drogheda while St. Malachy's Belfast play Mercy Mounthawk, Tralee in the other semi final on the same day. Some of these players are heading with the Bish senior basketball team to Porec in Croatia for the U18 World Schools Championships next May. The Bish were selected to represent Ireland boys by Baskeball Ireland based on their results last year while Holy Faith Clontarf will represent Ireland girls at the same tournament. Both teams travel together to Croatia for the ISF World Schools Championships on 29th March 2017 for 8 days. The World Championships takes place every two years. This is the first time the Bish basketballers will represent Ireland in the World Championships. The Bish soccer team however represented Ireland in the ISF World Schools Championships in 1987. Well done all.
