On 23 October, the launch of our Careers Forum 2017 saw us welcome our very kind sponsors Cantec and Bank of Ireland to the school. With their assistance, our Parents' Council can compliment the wonderful work of the Careers Guidance team at the Bish and ensure our students achieve broad based 'gold standard careers guidance'. On November 9th Mayor of Galway City, Cllr Pearce Flannery, will formally open the mornings forum for the 5th & 6th year students and we will see the school gym buzzing with the presence of 10 third level education providers (as well as a Students Union President & a company covering studying abroad) and over 45 representatives of various professions and trades from both the local and national community. To these people we extend a huge 'míle buíochas', your time and expertise are much appreciated - we couldn't 'pull it off' without you all.

WE WILL MISS THIS FUN EVENT

We were sorry to hear McCambridges will not be hosting a Food Wine Fair this year

bish careers forum 2016

No less than 40 different occupations and eight third level institutions were represented at our Careers Forum which proved to be a huge success recently.

Careers Day 2016 1

Together with the School Guidance team and Board of Management, we were all equally delighted and appreciative of the support from experienced professionals and tradespeople who gave up their time to offer invaluable advice to the second level students.

Occupations varying from accountancy to architecture, carpentry to cyber security, and pharmacy to psychology were among the 40 which were represented at the school.

Careers Day 2016 2

“We were delighted by the response from so many occupations and amazed at the willingness of even senior management within companies and colleges to come along and lend their guidance to our second level students”.  “The careers forum helps the students to find out as much as possible about the careers and courses available.  We appreciate how valuable it is for the boys to get an in-depth insight into a range of careers at this stage of their lives so they can finish out their post-primary education with focus.”

Many of those who offered free advice about their chosen careers were past-pupils of our school.

Students were delighted by the chance to talk in detail about careers they may not have considered previously, some of which currently have 100% placement rates for new graduates.

Colleges and further education bodies who had a presence at the Careers Forum included NUI Galway, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB), Galway Technical Institute (GTI), the Insurance Institute of Galway, Pulse College and the University of Limerick (UL).

Would you give a few hours of your time to guide Bish students?

change-careers-300x300

On Thursday 24th September 2015 the Bish Parents’ Council, working in partnership with the school, is hosting its Inaugural Careers Forum for 5th Year and Leaving Cert students.  We are inviting people from all careers, professions and walks of life to meet and chat with students on a one-to-one basis and answer questions about their particular job and the career path they took to get where they are.

This event so far is lucky to have the committed attendance support of all the main local colleges, together with representatives from many different professions and trades (many of whom are from the extended "Bish Community", ie past pupils and family members of current/past pupils) and will be launched by the City Mayor Cllr. Frank Fahy.

If you wish to be part of the event, or contribute in any way, please contact the Parents' Council for further details.
